Kate really is one of my favourite zinesters. Even simple things she writes about, like summer, being a brunette, video games, and full mail boxes has me glued to each page. She includes Hangin' Tough, the mini zine she wrote about her obsession New Kids on the Block when she was younger, several pages about libraries, her hometown, knitting, and more that also had me hooked. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's still into retro gaming, but I'm even more thrilled to be carrying Artichoke. Kate is a huge staple in the zine community, pick up any issue and you'll see why. Its about my four year old step-niece Emma & my relationship with/love for her. It details the struggles and joys of our step-family and discusses how much fun and excitement Emma and I have experienced in our times together. Emma lives in Taiwan, so I don't get to see her too often, and our times together are always both wonderful and sad. The zine finishes with a discussion of what I've learned from Emma and how she has helped me to be less serious and to find more joy in the little, seemingly insignificant things that life is full of." from Miranda.

The issue, to me, is structered sort of like a review zine, in a not so typical review zine format. Proving that she's not an A-political bore, she includes a paper she wrote on Riot Girl that would leave Tobi Vail green with envy. She writes about the movie Secretary in a fashion that was educational but interesting. Does it end there? Touche! She responds to the top complains she's heard about 28 Days Later, her take on The Shing (the movie), a great reading list, a persuasive letter about making zines, and wonderful imagery. A very stylish and structered zine by a girl who gracefully manages to showcase her insight and unequivocal writing ability.

The zine is just as good as it looks. It's bound with staples & duct tape, and I always find the hand touches very endearing. She wrote this letter to Michelle Williams that I couldn't stop grinning about. (You'll learn she has a couple things against Kevin Williamson, James Van Der Beek, and overzealous fans of the film version of Fight Club.) Pieces about Quentin Taratino, her early quarter-life crisis, unschooling/uncollegeing, and the band Pavement also make great cameos. A zine I definitely couldn't put down from start to finish.

There's a little comic about "Polly's Dream", a true account of dinner in Japan, a poem, and my favourite article, "How to be Your Own Best Friend" which is as cute as it is useful. Really great start for a lighthearted perzine.

What subculture and form of rebellion is there left, that has not already been exploited and marketed by the media? I just wish there was something new. There is still plenty to rebel about in society today, yet it seems nobody is doing anything about it."

There's a couple really enjoyable poems, and a lot of confusion and frustration. It's not a downward spiral in the least. It's a zine about someone coming into themselves and figuring out who they are and saying damn those who don't accept it. Really powerful.

It ends with "It Isn't Over Yet" .. which has left me giddy and craving more.

It's how I've always felt as well, and I think girls and guys need to read the whole thing. But just for a little taste, "I like sex and I'm not sorry."

There's so much Nadia reveals, including a letter to detriot, love, hpv and filing a complaint against a doctor, holding men accountable, shaving, and socialization. This is definitely a "growing up" issue. "I think it is important to question these things. What is our "place"? What is our role? Lately all I can think about is identity. My identity. If you are early 20s liberal arts school college student maybe you can relate. Maybe you cannot."

I could sense apprehension and hesitation from the first paragraph. While having a devil-may-care attitude is a great asset to some, vulnerability is something that everyone has in common. A dreamy perzine. Nadia says: "I think of my zine like a trashy celebrity gossip magazine, where I am the only celebrity and instead of journalists gossiping about me, I'm gossiping about myself. Where else would I be allowed to talk about myself for fifty straight pages? I am a young Arab-American female, and in a world where no one else cares what I have to say, this feels really good."

I'll be honest, the binding is what originally drew me to this zine. Subtitled "Postcards From a Ghost Town", Rose draws me in with stories and documentation of the darker side of detriot. There's something about day-to-day narratives that I find exceedingly boring. Luckily, Rose opts for a more mind-catching style. Old Weird America is much more than super rad binding, it's a great piece of work. Top notch zine, with solid writing to match. I don't expect the stories to end anytime soon, and I look forward to reading future issues.

Her intertwining of cool, sly observation with highly personal experience is reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson's early work, and makes for a very involving read. This zine is an adventure into Bryce's mind, with lots of great pictures along the way!

She describes life in Quebec City, gives facts about the culture, language, architecture, as well as sketches of buildings and maps. Random sketches of her neighbours and all her favourites (from food to people), create a distinct and beautiful potrait of IsaBelle. And if you've never read an issue of Orange & Blue, you're in luck! Because this will make you want to read all of them. Winter 2005 Edition.

It's about relationships with and to strangers, lovers, crushes, friends, and characters. There are two short stories included: an unfinished one about a girl with an eating disorder and another about a boy with a gun. There is also a poem (full of spiffy metaphors), some mild excuse for photography (or zine filler), and pieces in the veins of memoirs or vignettes (some fiction, some entirely real). This issue finds me exploring the world around me, finding the intricacies in it and in other people, and creating a bond between it/them and myself. [from madpeople.net]

Jen has a tight grip on good writing. It's very direct and sincere. There's a lot of conversations with other people and with herself. I think she puts it best: "Maybe it says something that one of the people that had so much to do with this issue is sitting a few feet away from me right now as I write this. He's reading a rough draft and I want to tell him, "I didn't mean it," but I really did. And I still do. And that's part of the problem. I am stuck in these circles that don't seem to go anywhere. This issue is all about that - it's about escaping one reality for a different slightly skewed version of it. Everything in the past year has changed and yet nothing has at all. On a good day, I am able to say that I am happier than I've been in months and conversely, I can also say that I'm just as miserable as I've always been. Both sentiments are true, often at the same exact time."

Fortunately for us, Abner never falls into a rambling of paranoia of "THE MAN" type of mentality when talking about all the various powers the America Government has at it's disposal. Fortunately, as well, it doesn't come off as a dry webzine read. It still holds the sought after opinionated voice everyone needs for a good old fashioned conspiracy theory. Very raw prose, poetry, and rant-filled perzine. The words provoke you, the images don't distract you, and her ideas and feelings are something to aspire to. "Yeah. I'm a feminist. I'm not scared to think it. I'm not scared to write it. I'm not even scared to say it out loud. I'm not radical, because I feel there's no need to be. I'm not scary, because that has never been productive. I love men, I love my relationships that I have with men. I think they're beautiful. But the more and more I explore this grand land of the occlusive SELF, the more I realized how important it is for me, as a female, to be a feminist. I think that female relationships are always going to be complicated, are always going to be feared and are always going to be problematic. But I also think that they're the most transformational relationships."

"In the 18th and early 19th centuries, linguists and philosophers came up with different theories of the origin of language, and the Danish linguist Otto Jespersen gave them whimsical nicknames. The one he called The La-La Theory put forth that language was borne of the need to express poetry and love." She made up a really fun word game, a limerick, a poem about tongue twisters, as well as how to say a tongue twister without messing up. Kate really knows her stuff and she proves it in this visually and mentally stimulating zine.

It includes an essay entitled, "Naked If I Want To: The Transgressive Power of Confessional Poetry and Personal Zines," that discusses the similarities between the work of confessional poets like Anne Sexton and contemporary confessional perzine writers and how both dare to speak their personal truth even when it threatens the mainstream social order and how this breaking of taboos often works as both therapy for the writer and inspiration for the reader. This zine also deals with my fear of writing/fear of myself, details an intensely beautiful and confusing teenage friendship, discusses my anxiety about not knowing what career/life plan to follow and how I'm worried that time will run out to choose, and finally, discusses how buying secondhand can be both an aesthetic and a political choice. The Pleiades is the perzine of perzines, and this is definitely one not to miss.

It's the first zine in a series that will go on, I hope, for many issues."

This text-heavy zine will definitely make you think. Eric is a teacher and definitely a sensitive guy, spilling out anger and guilt. This zine is a healthy balance between personal and political. Among the political talk, there's a really bittersweet story about how he missed being in jail (he was sent there for a civil protest), a rant about New York, and samplings of his childhood. He's honest about what he believes in, and definitely has a lot of passion for writing and making a zine. This is a pretty rare zine, written back in 2004, so get your copy while you can.

Jeremy has a way with words, Katie's drawings are impeccable, and Hannah's photography is dreamy. That being said, they all mix together incredibly well to turn out these stories (mostly of Kevin, Ted, and Jeff), and attention-grabbing parts like "Shit that doesn't make sense." All in all, I'm glad these three teamed up to make this zine. I definitely can't wait for the next one, and I don't think you'll be able to either.

This is a collection of essays, stories, and thoughts from both ends of the economic divide. When she was little, Penny thought about money way too much, and this zine is her soap box. There's also the cutest comic about someone paying off their student loans.

Whether you're unemployed, wanting to leave the cubicle and want to make crafting your main source of income, this is for you. "WILL CRAFT FOR FOOD."
