Artichoke #7

Artichoke #7

by KATE / 16 pp.
Kate gets stronger and stronger with each page. The feelings are intense, personal, and raw. She lays it all out on the table, whilst keeping in mind that others are reading about her inner and outer demons and angels. Even her dedication captivated me. "i dedicate this zine to all the people who hurt me, all the people who were written about here both directly and indirectly. you got me good, but now that this is down on paper it's over. i dedicate this zine to me, circa january - may 2003. i was so fucked up, but i was the most beautiful and linguistically spot-on i've ever been. and i love me for it." If you've never read any issues of Artichoke, it's most definitely better late than never.

Artichoke #8

Artichoke #8

by KATE / 40 pp.
Kate really is one of my favourite zinesters. Even simple things she writes about, like summer, being a brunette, video games, and full mail boxes has me glued to each page. She includes Hangin' Tough, the mini zine she wrote about her obsession New Kids on the Block when she was younger, several pages about libraries, her hometown, knitting, and more that also had me hooked. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's still into retro gaming, but I'm even more thrilled to be carrying Artichoke. Kate is a huge staple in the zine community, pick up any issue and you'll see why. "special skills: mad knitting skills. can cook up a meal that will turn enemies into lovers. persuasive enough to get what she wants pretty much all the time."

BEST ZINE EVER! #4

BEST ZINE EVER! #4

colaboration / 32 pp.
A great zine review supplement chronicling the choice picks of 2005 from such zine enthusiasts as Brooke Young, Misun Oh,Jon Van Oast, Sean Stewart, Paul Nama, AJ Michel, Alex Lonstreth, Rebecca Gilbert, Jenna Friedman, Sarah Contrary, Joe Biel, Greg Beans, Taylor Ball, and the infamous Artnoose. It's a labor of love and many of the descriptions urged me to pick up new zines that I had only heard of or were completely new to me. What a great way to find new zine and the price is right! Twice the size of last year's issue! [from microcosm]

Brainscan #20

by ALEX WREKK / 64 pp.
This zine is about reflection and synthesis of location and it's effect on the human condition. It's full of stories that fit nicely into a venn diagram. There are stories about Alex Wrekk living in Utah, stories about living in Portland, and stories that merge the two; illuminating that Utah always finds her or that she's always managing to find it. Other themes are home and place through stories about personal ghosts, lost friendship, late night adventures, a coffeeshop, heartache, drinking, and the untimely demise of her bicycle, Jamie; exploring the connections between cyclists and the city streets they love. Quarter sized with letter pressed covers and continues the tradition from last issue of being very text heavy with high contrast cut and paste layout.

by LISA / 16 pp.
Lisa lives in Dublin, Ireland, which I have a feeling inspired the theme of this zine. She talks about women in music, travel, the library, and more than I could hope for in a zine. This 1/4 sized zine packs a one, two punch. Great if you like reading about adventure and maps.

Checkered Past #13

Checkered Past #13

by LARA / 30 pp.
This perzine isn't about anything specific, which I tend to enjoy. You don't know what's coming at you. It starts out with these wonderful predictions for all the signs on the zodiac chart, as well as ones made up. After that, I was hooked. The layout doesn't blend in or stand out (it's not mediocre, either) so it makes the lengthy pieces a pleasure to delve in and out of.

Clara Marie Candycane & Me

Clara Marie Candycane & Me

by MIRANDA / 22 pp.
One of the most endearing zines I've ever read. "I completed Clara Marie Candycane & Me for the 2005 24 hour zine challenge. Its about my four year old step-niece Emma & my relationship with/love for her. It details the struggles and joys of our step-family and discusses how much fun and excitement Emma and I have experienced in our times together. Emma lives in Taiwan, so I don't get to see her too often, and our times together are always both wonderful and sad. The zine finishes with a discussion of what I've learned from Emma and how she has helped me to be less serious and to find more joy in the little, seemingly insignificant things that life is full of." from Miranda.

Dangeresque #1

Dangeresque #1

by SARAH / 28 pp.
The issue, to me, is structered sort of like a review zine, in a not so typical review zine format. Proving that she's not an A-political bore, she includes a paper she wrote on Riot Girl that would leave Tobi Vail green with envy. She writes about the movie Secretary in a fashion that was educational but interesting. Does it end there? Touche! She responds to the top complains she's heard about 28 Days Later, her take on The Shing (the movie), a great reading list, a persuasive letter about making zines, and wonderful imagery. A very stylish and structered zine by a girl who gracefully manages to showcase her insight and unequivocal writing ability.

Dangeresque #2

Dangeresque #2

by SARAH / 40 pp.
The zine is just as good as it looks. It's bound with staples & duct tape, and I always find the hand touches very endearing. She wrote this letter to Michelle Williams that I couldn't stop grinning about. (You'll learn she has a couple things against Kevin Williamson, James Van Der Beek, and overzealous fans of the film version of Fight Club.) Pieces about Quentin Taratino, her early quarter-life crisis, unschooling/uncollegeing, and the band Pavement also make great cameos. A zine I definitely couldn't put down from start to finish.

Extreme Noses #1

Extreme Noses #1

by SALOME & JJ / 25 pp.
I thought "Extreme Noses" was actually "Extreme Noises" for the longest time. I still don't get why it's called that, but it doesn't distract me for too long from the zine. There's a little comic about "Polly's Dream", a true account of dinner in Japan, a poem, and my favourite article, "How to be Your Own Best Friend" which is as cute as it is useful. Really great start for a lighthearted perzine.

Free, Blonde and 21

Free, Blonde and 21

by STEPHANIE / 18 pp.
"Free, Blonde and 21 is a fanzine dedicated to all things about and related to blonde, B-movie bombshell Mary Beth Hughes. I first discovered Mary Beth in 2002 when my brother gave me a video of the Mystery Science Theater 3000 episode "I accuse My Parents," in which Ms. Hughes played Kitty Reed. The movie was terrible, but I was enchanted by Mary Beth's talent, her bodacious blondeness and her pin-up girl looks. Ever since then I've been collecting pictures, movies, magazines, and anything else I can find with her in it. And I've ammassed quite the collection, but I'm always looking for more." - Stephanie

Sexuality is such a huge issue and sometimes hard to speak articulately about. I know perzines are supposed to be personal, but this one will really touch you. It's about a mother's story of her child's birth. Mind Clutter #1

Mind Clutter #1

by JENN / 20 pp.
Jenn's drawings are as excellent as her random stories and thoughts. Jenn's personal style of writing makes me feel like she's sitting next to me chatting away about everything from politics to nostalgic moments. "Sometimes I wish I were a flapper girl of the '20s or a pin up girl of the '40s or a greaser girl in a gang of the '50s or a hippie of the '60s or a punk of the '70s and '80s. But I'm not. I always thought I was born much too late, and consequently, I've missed out on all the cool eras. What subculture and form of rebellion is there left, that has not already been exploited and marketed by the media? I just wish there was something new. There is still plenty to rebel about in society today, yet it seems nobody is doing anything about it."

Price: $1.00

Mind Clutter #2

Mind Clutter #2

by JENN / 26 pp.
It's best said by Jenn herself, "Mind Clutter is a chronological journal of the people, places, evens, ramblings, and thoughts that take place in my life and throughout my culttered mind. I'd suggest reading issue 1 before you read this, but either way, hopefully you get some sort of enjoyment or insight by reading about my modest and somewhat random life. I also love getting mail. The events and feelings described in this particular issue take place during the course of one night. It is mostly about the relationship between me and a friend and how we've grown apart and questioning the high school experience and what it means to grow up."

A perzine about love, loss and the life of a senior in high school. Christy gives us touching poetry, worthwhile art, and noteable rants. She really is an amazing writer, telling us about friends that don't really act like friends, loneliness, escapism, and wanting life to speed up.

My Own Make Believe #2

My Own Make Believe #2

by ALICIA DE / 12 pp.
Ah, the perks of cut and paste perzines. Alicia was the owner of the now defunct Def Crew Distro. She starts out by telling the readers they shouldn't be offended, and I hope she realises she doesn't need to explain beliefs and thoughts and convictions. There's a couple really enjoyable poems, and a lot of confusion and frustration. It's not a downward spiral in the least. It's a zine about someone coming into themselves and figuring out who they are and saying damn those who don't accept it. Really powerful.

Price: $1.00

My Own Make Believe #3

My Own Make Believe #3

by ALICIA DE / 34 pp.
I wish every series of zines I read could be like MOMB. It's really progressed from the last issue. There's so much more insight to her as a person. She had me hooked from her introduction, which doesn't usually happen. "This is an explanation fo her days. Her Thoughts. Her Life. Her." (Note: I'm also glad I'm not the only one who talks in third person.) Memories and completely just putting her heart on paper. It ends with "It Isn't Over Yet" .. which has left me giddy and craving more.

Price: $1.00

My Own Make Believe #4

My Own Make Believe #4

by ALICIA DE / 22 pp.
Even more progress from the last time. This issue is a lot more grown-up. There was quite a time gap from the previous issue, but the results were well worth the wait. This issue had a more powerful message than any of the previous. It was still about growing up and the how, when, and the why, but there was a page where she talks about the word "slut." It's how I've always felt as well, and I think girls and guys need to read the whole thing. But just for a little taste, "I like sex and I'm not sorry."

No Snow Here #10

No Snow Here #10

by NADIA / 32 pp.
This issue takes an even deeper look on everything. It was when Nadia said "I'm older now, less hello kitty stationary & more quick email from work." that I knew this zine would be intelligent, honest, and everything you look for in a perzine. There's so much Nadia reveals, including a letter to detriot, love, hpv and filing a complaint against a doctor, holding men accountable, shaving, and socialization. This is definitely a "growing up" issue. "I think it is important to question these things. What is our "place"? What is our role? Lately all I can think about is identity. My identity. If you are early 20s liberal arts school college student maybe you can relate. Maybe you cannot."

Price: $1.00

No Snow Here #9

No Snow Here #9

by NADIA / 36 pp.
I could sense apprehension and hesitation from the first paragraph. While having a devil-may-care attitude is a great asset to some, vulnerability is something that everyone has in common. A dreamy perzine. Nadia says: "I think of my zine like a trashy celebrity gossip magazine, where I am the only celebrity and instead of journalists gossiping about me, I'm gossiping about myself. Where else would I be allowed to talk about myself for fifty straight pages? I am a young Arab-American female, and in a world where no one else cares what I have to say, this feels really good."

Old Weird America #1

Old Weird America #1

by ROSE WHITE / 36 pp.
I'll be honest, the binding is what originally drew me to this zine. Subtitled "Postcards From a Ghost Town", Rose draws me in with stories and documentation of the darker side of detriot. There's something about day-to-day narratives that I find exceedingly boring. Luckily, Rose opts for a more mind-catching style. Old Weird America is much more than super rad binding, it's a great piece of work. Top notch zine, with solid writing to match. I don't expect the stories to end anytime soon, and I look forward to reading future issues.

Price: $2.00

Old Weird America #2

Old Weird America #2

by ROSE WHITE / 32 pp.

"Transplanted now to New York, literary whiz and grade-A badass Rosie White deftly retells her strange adventures in the dirty city. In the series of brief essays, we see her sew sequins and smear whiteface for an off-off-Broadway theater production, give slouching, conflicted lap dances and peep shows to customers she resents, attend uncomfortable cocktail parties, and be stunned by the odd moment of beauty that appears out of the grit. Her intertwining of cool, sly observation with highly personal experience is reminiscent of Hunter S. Thompson's early work, and makes for a very involving read. Old Weird America #2 is not a zine to be missed." (Microcosm)

Ooh La La #3

Ooh La La #3

by BRYCE WARNES / 24 pp.
Ooh la la #3 is mostly about winter. Bryce is a Canadian zinester who has a great comic art style and really brings his ideas about winter into perspective through his illustrations. He talks about the ups and downs of winter time, gives an introduction to leg wrestling (?!), pieces by/about Tristan Tzara, and much more. This zine is an adventure into Bryce's mind, with lots of great pictures along the way!

Orange & Blue #0

Orange & Blue #0

by ISABELLE / 38 pp.
Subtitled "Everything you should know before reading an issue of Orange & Blue", his perzine was like reading the journal of a French-Canadian penpal. Orange & Blue [now defunct, but you can still order copies at her website] is a great introduction to IsaBelle's own little world. She describes life in Quebec City, gives facts about the culture, language, architecture, as well as sketches of buildings and maps. Random sketches of her neighbours and all her favourites (from food to people), create a distinct and beautiful potrait of IsaBelle. And if you've never read an issue of Orange & Blue, you're in luck! Because this will make you want to read all of them. Winter 2005 Edition.

Poetic Justice 2.5

Poetic Justice 2.5

by STEPHANIE CARLIN / 34 pp.
A poetry/litzine at it's finest. She says, "This issue is completely different. I'm not hiding through as many cliches. This time I'm letting it all go. Here are the background stories, the secrets I refused to tell and the fuck-ups I forgot about. Enjoy." The good kind of angsty and full of good imagery.

She's Not a Morning Person #6

She's Not a Morning Person #6

by JEN / 78 pp.
The new issue has been about a year and a half in the making & if I had to throw a theme on it, I'd call it the "fictitious fantasy" issue. It's about relationships with and to strangers, lovers, crushes, friends, and characters. There are two short stories included: an unfinished one about a girl with an eating disorder and another about a boy with a gun. There is also a poem (full of spiffy metaphors), some mild excuse for photography (or zine filler), and pieces in the veins of memoirs or vignettes (some fiction, some entirely real). This issue finds me exploring the world around me, finding the intricacies in it and in other people, and creating a bond between it/them and myself. [from madpeople.net]

Price: $2.50

She's Not a Morning Person #7

She's Not a Morning Person #7

by JEN / 40 pp.
Jen has a tight grip on good writing. It's very direct and sincere. There's a lot of conversations with other people and with herself. I think she puts it best: "Maybe it says something that one of the people that had so much to do with this issue is sitting a few feet away from me right now as I write this. He's reading a rough draft and I want to tell him, "I didn't mean it," but I really did. And I still do. And that's part of the problem. I am stuck in these circles that don't seem to go anywhere. This issue is all about that - it's about escaping one reality for a different slightly skewed version of it. Everything in the past year has changed and yet nothing has at all. On a good day, I am able to say that I am happier than I've been in months and conversely, I can also say that I'm just as miserable as I've always been. Both sentiments are true, often at the same exact time."

Suburban Waste #1

by JENN / 41 pp.
Jenn is a facinating writer, and she doesn't slow down for Suburban Waste #1. If you didn't guess, this zine is centered around Suburbia. Ramblings about McDonalds, Starbucks, absurdity of suburbia, Tim Burton, as well as her lovely drawings to match. Cover comes in assorted colours!

Price: $2.00

Suburban Waste #2

Suburban Waste #2

by JENN / 34 pp.
Another dazzling issue of Suburban Waste by Jenn. Slightly less personal than "Mind Clutter," yet equally deserving of praise. She writes about her shyness, the irony of a "no smoking" sign in McDonald's, her childhood, the popularity of a hummer in suburbia, and getting kicked out by mall security guards. Cover comes in assorted colours!

Suburban Waste #3

Suburban Waste #3

by JENN / 38 pp.
A LOT more text-heavy than the two previous issues of Suburban Waste, and still as amazing as ever. Jenn writes with a fervor about violence and drug use in suburbia, nostalgia, and an endearing comic entitled "The Celibate Life". I can't get enough of Jenn's zines, and neither will you once you get your hands on this puppy! Cover comes in assorted colours!

The Blueprint

by KARIN / 21 pp.
Perzines are one of the greatest forms of expression. Ones that are uninhibited and free flowing are even better. This 24 hour zine includes the random thoughts of a 19 year old chick from Switzerland who's admittedly lazy and loves tea. Really cute.

The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting #1

The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting #1

by ABNER / 19 pp.
The first in a series of zines about "the CIA / FBI involvement in domestic affairs and assassinations." Fortunately for us, Abner never falls into a rambling of paranoia of "THE MAN" type of mentality when talking about all the various powers the America Government has at it's disposal. Fortunately, as well, it doesn't come off as a dry webzine read. It still holds the sought after opinionated voice everyone needs for a good old fashioned conspiracy theory. All of this mentally-stimulating goodness is put together in a pocket-sized zine printed on newsprint. Artwork by Keith Rosson and Sarah Oleksyk.

The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting #2

The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting #2

by ABNER / 31 pp.
This zine explains the history of US chemical biological testing and development, how the HIV virus cannot scientifically be related to AIDS, CIA and military documents requesting the creation of a virus with the clinical description of AIDS, and how AIDS death statistics have been inflated for the last 20 years when the supposed "miracle cure" drugs kill the patients even faster than AIDS.

The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting #3

by ABNER / 32 pp.
A look at the way the PATRIOT act and post 9/11 security measures infected our civil liberties and infringed upon basic American rights and freedoms. We are proud to present a document that everyone needs to be reading and getting upset about! Abner traded off his zine duting for this issue for the text to be written by Gena Mason and Illustrations by Keith Rosson. Note resemblance to airplane safety manual.

The Interview was Literal #4

The Interview was Literal #4

by LISA / 22 pp.
Very raw prose, poetry, and rant-filled perzine. The words provoke you, the images don't distract you, and her ideas and feelings are something to aspire to. "Yeah. I'm a feminist. I'm not scared to think it. I'm not scared to write it. I'm not even scared to say it out loud. I'm not radical, because I feel there's no need to be. I'm not scary, because that has never been productive. I love men, I love my relationships that I have with men. I think they're beautiful. But the more and more I explore this grand land of the occlusive SELF, the more I realized how important it is for me, as a female, to be a feminist. I think that female relationships are always going to be complicated, are always going to be feared and are always going to be problematic. But I also think that they're the most transformational relationships."

The La La Theory #1

The La La Theory #1

by KATE / 24 pp.
"In the 18th and early 19th centuries, linguists and philosophers came up with different theories of the origin of language, and the Danish linguist Otto Jespersen gave them whimsical nicknames. The one he called The La-La Theory put forth that language was borne of the need to express poetry and love." She made up a really fun word game, a limerick, a poem about tongue twisters, as well as how to say a tongue twister without messing up. Kate really knows her stuff and she proves it in this visually and mentally stimulating zine.

The Pleiades #14

The Pleiades #14

by MIRANDA CELESTE / 18 pp.
The Pleiades #14 is subtitled "this is the blood that we're made from." It's all about family history & self-esteem & the frequent cruelty of life & how "how things are" easily turns into "how things should be". It's about where our issues & emotional problems come from & how they pass down through generations unquestioned & how we can break negative & destructive cycles of thought & behavior. & It's about trying to fill up our emptiness & pain with all the wrong things/people & coming to the realization that, ultimately, the only thing that can fulfill us is ourselves & our self-confidence & passions. The Pleiades #15

The Pleiades #15

by MIRANDA CELESTE / 18 pp.
The Pleiades #15 is subtitled "I'll keep it with mine." It includes an essay entitled, "Naked If I Want To: The Transgressive Power of Confessional Poetry and Personal Zines," that discusses the similarities between the work of confessional poets like Anne Sexton and contemporary confessional perzine writers and how both dare to speak their personal truth even when it threatens the mainstream social order and how this breaking of taboos often works as both therapy for the writer and inspiration for the reader. This zine also deals with my fear of writing/fear of myself, details an intensely beautiful and confusing teenage friendship, discusses my anxiety about not knowing what career/life plan to follow and how I'm worried that time will run out to choose, and finally, discusses how buying secondhand can be both an aesthetic and a political choice. The Pleiades #16

The Pleiades #16

by MIRANDA CELESTE / 18 pp.
The Pleiades has always been intelligent, passionate, relatable, and insightful. Somehow, Miranda manages to take ten steps up from all of this. This issue deals with her growing up and facing a lot of past issues and a lot of realizations and what has made her a real adult. The Pleiades is the perzine of perzines, and this is definitely one not to miss.

Words can't even describe how much I love this zine. First of all, it's 80 pages. It's the biggest zine in the distro. Secondly, she didn't waste on single page. This issue focuses around her first year of living in New York. And what a year it was.

Trabant #1

Trabant #1

by MEGAN / 64 pp.
I think one of many things I love about Megan's zines (Sublet, Clark 8) is the fact that she, as a person, is so multidimensional. Trabant #1 is no different. She explains, "This zine is about movement, and moving fast, taking risks or seeking thrills, and it's about the things I love. It's about my life during the first month of 2005. It's the first zine in a series that will go on, I hope, for many issues."

Triangulated #2

Triangulated #2

by ERIC / 22 pp.
This text-heavy zine will definitely make you think. Eric is a teacher and definitely a sensitive guy, spilling out anger and guilt. This zine is a healthy balance between personal and political. Among the political talk, there's a really bittersweet story about how he missed being in jail (he was sent there for a civil protest), a rant about New York, and samplings of his childhood. He's honest about what he believes in, and definitely has a lot of passion for writing and making a zine. This is a pretty rare zine, written back in 2004, so get your copy while you can.

Twin Paradox #1

Twin Paradox #1

by JEREMY / 18 pp.
Jeremy has a way with words, Katie's drawings are impeccable, and Hannah's photography is dreamy. That being said, they all mix together incredibly well to turn out these stories (mostly of Kevin, Ted, and Jeff), and attention-grabbing parts like "Shit that doesn't make sense." All in all, I'm glad these three teamed up to make this zine. I definitely can't wait for the next one, and I don't think you'll be able to either.

Wicked Concrete Luxury

Wicked Concrete Luxury

by PENNY / 48 pp.
I was surprised when I found out this was Penny's first zine. It's always nice to have a fresh outlook, and when someone has brand new ideas to bring to the table. This is a collection of essays, stories, and thoughts from both ends of the economic divide. When she was little, Penny thought about money way too much, and this zine is her soap box. There's also the cutest comic about someone paying off their student loans.

You're Not as Weird as You Thought You Were

You're Not as Weird as You Thought You Were

by MARTINE / 23 pp.
Another fantastic zine by Martine, subtitled "What We Do When We're Alone." The title is pretty straightfoward. It's a compilation zine including anonymous submissions from an online form telling, you guessed it, the weird things they do when they're alone. From gross, to silly, to pretty damn strange.
